Palace Politics, Intended Assassinations, a mysterious King, and a brilliant, but slightly psychotic, heroine. The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller has it all. This beautifully done novel draws you in from the very first sentence, "They've never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart."
Our main character, Alessandra, has a plan to become the most powerful woman in her kingdom. She wants to change the way her kingdom sees women and give them more independence. Which sounds very noble, right?? It's why we love her. In a kingdom that still treats women as property, our heroine is bucking tradition left and right. In a historical novel, this type of progressive, stubborn heroine is a breath of fresh air and makes reading all of the patriarchal nonsense bearable.
The main love interest, the Shadow King, has many good book boyfriend qualities. He is mysterious, which keeps their courtship interesting. He is a distrustful man, which just adds to the mystique already surrounding him as a young King. And he’s a freaking king, need we say more??
